Oswegoland Seniors, Inc., (OSCC – Oswegoland Senior and Community Center) has been serving seniors since 2007 at the behest of the Village of Oswego to address unmet needs of seniors in the community. Initially hosted at local church, OSCC quickly outgrew that facility and has since moved three times due to circumstances beyond its control, finally purchasing the vacated Oswego Police station in early 2022. The new space provides visibility, stability, continuity and expansion of our programming. Vacated in 2018, the building has major limitations due to originally being built in1991 and only serving as the Oswego Police station headquarters. OSCC took ownership of the building in February 2022 and spent roughly$100,000 to bring the building up to code. However, many limitations still exist including ADA compliance and an elevator is needed as well as updates to make the space more user-friendly for seniors and the community such as changing the main entrance and finishing a large section of the lower level which has unfinished concrete floors and exposed beams.
After the pandemic, the return of attendance was slow. However, in January 2023 more programs have been added and extended hours recently began, and the building is now bustling on a daily basis. Once serving 2,300 seniors annually at our former location, we are now seeing the numbers of participants climb to over 1,600 annually with new participants joining every day. The buildout is necessary to serve more and more people to access all parts of our building for ADA accessibility and compliance.
This new and updated facility is a gathering place for the entire community. Programs offered include caregiver and grief support group, group exercise classes, gentle yoga, pickleball classes, senior singers, bunco, bingo, bridge, Medicare forums, hearing screenings, scam awareness programs, veterans’ assistance, as well as financial and attorney hours. All of these programs are offered at little to no cost to the clientele. New Intergenerational Programs started in April 2024and include teen programming and an opportunity for seniors and teens to work together. Data shows that socialization is the most important part of a seniors’ life and without the Oswegoland Senior and Community Center many of our seniors would not have an outlet for that.

OSCC’s goal is to raise $2 .2 million dollars which are the necessary funds for the elevator, renovations of the new main entrance and the lower level and to pay off the remaining debt of the purchase of the building.
